The Author

Jon Towlson is the author of the books Subversive Horror Cinema: Countercultural Messages of Films from Frankenstein to the Present (McFarland, 2014), The Turn to Gruesomeness in American Horror Films, 1931 - 1936 (McFarland, 2016), Constellations: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Auteur/ Columbia University Press, 2016) and Devil's Advocates: Candyman (Auteur/ Columbia University Press, 2018)

Jon is a regular contributor to Starburst Magazine, and has also written for the BFI, Scream, The Dark Side, Diabolique, The Quietus, OffscreenParacinema, Exquisite Terror, Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror StudiesShadowland Magazine, Bright Lights Film Journal and Digital FilmMaker

He has lectured at University of York, University of Leeds, University of York St John, Middlesex University, and the Arts University Bournemouth, as well as giving talks at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, The Electric Cinema in Birmingham,  The Derby Quad, City Screen Picturehouse in York, Cine Excess VIII and Dark Delicacies in Burbank, CA.

Jon has introduced film screenings at The ICA, The Derby Quad, The Shock and Gore Festival, Birmingham, The Mayhem Film Festival, Nottingham, The Yorkshire Silent Film Festival, Leeds and at City Screen Picturehouse,York where he also runs film appreciation classes.

He has contributed DVD booklet essays for Arrow, Second Sight and Eureka.

Jon has been nominated four times for a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award 'honoring the best in classic horror research'.
