Interview with Naila Scargill, Editor of Exquisite Terror

Since Naila Scargill started Exquisite Terror a few years back, the magazine (and website) has gone from strength to strength to become one of the most interesting and quirky horror zines around. Naila herself is a fascinating interviewee, as this wonderful piece with Keri O'Shea shows.

Review of Justin Humphreys' Interviews Too Shocking to Print

The title might be a little misleading - there's little in the way of shocking in the interviews contained in this book - but this is a great book of essays, interviews and articles nonetheless. Humphreys has collected these interviews with often obscure writers, directors, visual f/x artists and production designers over a number of years, and the result is an affectionate glimpse into the fringes of Hollywood and some of the lesser known, often forgotten and overlooked talent residing there.

Review of Beyond Fear: Reflections on Stephen King, Wes Craven and George Romero's Living Dead.

Author Joseph Maddrey has had a busy year: as well as editing A Strange Idea of Entertainment: Conversations with Tom McLoughlin (director of One Dark Night [1982]) he has published an in-depth study of the careers and works of three of the most important horror masters of all time: George A. Romero, Wes Craven and Stephen King.

Dark Delicacies

I'm just back from a trip to LA where, as well as enjoying the sunshine, I signed copies of my book at Dark Delicacies, a great horror bookstore in Burbank. Dark Delicacies is run by Del and Sue Howison. If you're ever in LA I'd recommend you look it up. I was just one of four Horror in Entertainment authors signing there on August 16th, 2014. The others were Alain Silver and James Ursini writers of numerous horror movie books including their latest The Zombie Film: from White Zombie to World War Z; Joseph Maddrey signing his new book, Beyond Fear: Reflections on Stephen King, Wes Craven and George Romero's Living Dead; and Justin Humphreys signing Interviews Too Shocking To Print! Also dropping in were the directors Tom McLoughlin and Victor Salva, and the iconic Lance Henrickson.

Digital FilmMaker #15

In this month's Digital FilmMaker Magazine I interview Larry Fessenden, the writer-producer-director-actor I describe in Subversive Horror Cinema as having done "more than anyone to promote independent horror production in the last ten years", and who has a "genuine sense of the subversive potential of the genre". I also review the new Romero doc Birth of the Living Dead, which Fessenden executive produced.

Pick up a copy from your local WH SMITHS or TESCO (!) or order online direct from Select Publishing Services. Also available for iPhone and iPad.

You can also read the interview at Larry's website Glasseye pix

Jon Towlson on Jeff Lieberman's BLUE SUNSHINE

Introducing BLUE SUNSHINE at the ICA this week was a blast. It was great to see the film in 35mm. The audience really enjoyed it, and so did I. You can read my introduction to the film over on the ICA blog.

The Borderlands

Producer Jen Handorf is riding high a moment, and with good reason. The Borderlands is a funny and gripping thriller that reinvigorates the found-footage genre. I met Jen at the Mayhem Film Festival last October, and I knew that she would be great person to interview for Digital Film Maker Magazine. Her approach shows true independent film-making spirit and a genuine love of the horror genre. You can read my interview with Jen Handorf in this month's Digital Film Maker Magazine, available throughout the UK at WH Smiths, or direct from the publisher

Space Monsters 3

Space Monsters 3 is out now and it's a good 'un. The brainchild of editor, Richard Gladman, Space Monsters, just to make the point obvious, is designed to celebrate monsters from outer space (or with a definite sci-fi slant!) Hence, issue 3 focuses on Frankenstein on film, with a strong Hammer contingent.

Digital Film Maker Magazine Issue 12

In this month's issue of Digital Film Maker Magazine, I talk to Robert Nevitt, director and programmer of Sheffield's Celluloid Screams. Now in its fifth year, and going from strength to strength, Rob talks us through the festival's history, from how he set it up initially as a one-off special event, to his building it as a major annual UK horror fest.

I had the pleasure of attending this year's Celluloid Screams and had a blast. You can read about my adventures here.

Digital Film Maker is available at all WH Smiths. You can order it direct from the publisher here. Or in its digital version here.

Interview with Eric Falardeau - director of Thanatomorphose

Rotting never felt this good! So says the publicity for Monster Pictures’ Thantomorphose, the feature debut of French-Canadian director Èric Falardeau. Reminiscent of New French Extremity films such as Inside (2007) and In My Skin (2002), Thanatomorphose is ‘body horror’ with an existential twist. Read my interview with the director here.
